What Kacey Musgraves’ Vietnamese Dress Taught Us About Cultural Costumes

With Halloween just around the corner, it's once again time for a public service announcement: Don't appropriate culture for a costume. If you're worried about offending someone, the good news is that it's easy to avoid. Does your costume involve stereotypical signifiers like sombreros or, god forbid, blackface? Skip it. Does your costume oversexualize women of color, like a slutty geisha or Native American princess? If in doubt, choose something else (like a mouse, duh!). For example, trends are booming these days like the crop tops, sling bags, thick eyebrows, high waist pants, shoulder pads, overalls, chokers, and bandanas were all huge hits decades ago. via GIPHY The third category is the infamous star of the show...

Barbie Is All Grown Up And Is Now National Geographic’s New Photojournalist

Image via Mattel Barbie has departed from pink frilly dresses—she now wields a DSLR as National Geographic’s new photojournalist. The network has collaborated with Barbie maker Mattel to launch Barbie Photojournalist Doll, designed to help nurture “imagination, expression and discovery.” The doll comes dressed for the field in a vest, National Geographic Society insignia, brown pants and tan boots. To carry out her work, Barbie Photojournalist Doll brings around a National Geographic magazine and camera with a handle for “role-play fun.” Perhaps due to her charisma, a lion cub follows her everywhere to be photographed. Mattel’s new career doll is available at US$14.99 here. Image via Mattel Image via Mattel Image via Mattel Image via Mattel [via PetaPixel, images via...
