Fitness vs. Fatness (Part 2) Last week, we commenced a survey of the early years of animation’s love affair with the budding fad of exercise and fitness programs, mostly promoting the healthy values of such endeavors, despite several of its participating characters coming out of such experiences as a total wreck. By the mid 1930’s, a counter-side began to rise in several animation quarters, resulting in a short flurry of several cartoons finding their humor in onscreen exhibitions of the results of massive calorie ingestion and voracious appetites. This week’s fare will thus present the flip-side of the immortal question, “To eat or not to eat”, allowing the principal characters to obtain their fill, and hopefully audiences to obtain an...

Charting the Land of Great Loneline

ss "The Castle Berg," by Herbert George, Antarctica, 1910. Courtesy of the Library of Congress. Two men squat in a small tent on the Antarctic plateau, hungrily watching their Primus stove. With no hope of rescue, they’re trying to cross more than two hundred miles of treacherous terrain to base camp before they starve to death. Members of the larger Australasian Antarctic Expedition, they’d left Hobart, Tasmania a year before, in December 1911, the Heroic Age of polar exploration. I’m just 35, and childless, but aging parents and grandparents appear to be the casino’s target demographic. A few rounds in, I look to my left and see a little girl and her mother at a Video Poker unit. Kids aren’t allowed to hang out in casinos. The actual law forbids it. I guess Binion’s quit enforcing that one, so the rest of us have to pretend this depressing atmosphere didn’t get even sadder. The woman pokes the touchscreen,...

13 Extreme Stories of Helicopter Parenting

Parenting is never easy. You have to take care of your kid, teach them and watch them grow. Kids these days, especially teens, are extremely sensitive. They don’t want you to step inside their boundaries. The best way IN MY OPINION is to have them learn on their own. It shocks me how some parents never let their kids grow and explore. I found this thread in Reddit and it is truly shocking how extreme they are! 1. But Why? “I had a mother call me to find out why her son didn’t get the job.  He’s 40. And a lawyer.” Via Voice of Craisin 2. Public Un-Wedgied My Mum owned a daycare center, and I worked there when I...
