How To Start a Campfire, Roast Marshmallows, and Make S’Mores [Video]

By Dad, how do I?

.

.

How to start a campfire, roast marshmallows & make s’mores.

Kindling – scraps of wood, you can chop some pieces off of your log if needed with a hatchet.
Newspaper – something light (cardboard works if you have to, but
Dry wood – start with dry wood, once the fire is hot, you can add wood that is a little wetter.
Air circulation is crucial – don’t smother it.

S’more (give me some more, yes please)
Graham crackers, marshmallows, milk chocolate.

Be sure to put out the fire completely when you are done.
Even if it looks out, embers can still be burning underneath.

00:00
hey kids so today and I’ll show you how
00:03
to light a campfire in case you that’s
00:06
something you’ve never done before the
00:08
main thing you want to do is kind of
00:09
make sure there’s lots of air
00:11
circulating with it you don’t want to
00:13
smother it so there’s just a little bit
00:17
you want to play with when you’re first
00:19
getting it started so before we do that
00:21
I have a dad joke for you whether the
00:24
Millennials say after he started the
00:26
campfire that’s so lit so anyway let’s
00:30
get started okay so the way the way that
00:35
I do this is I normally take a decent
00:39
sized log something kind of light right
00:52
cardboard might work but I would like
01:07
that and then have some kin
01:10
the important part of this do is having
01:12
dry wood you want to make sure you have
01:13
dry wood to get started okay I have my
01:25
fancy later
01:29
to get it going you just want to make
01:32
sure that you got good airflow that’s
01:34
kind of the main thing it’s having good
01:36
airflow you smother it it’s not gonna
01:40
work
02:01
okay I think this the skin wins fairly
02:04
dry so it’s good to have that going good
02:06
okay
02:32
okay as long as that what’s dry it’ll
02:43
work good like that and again you want
02:46
to just keep the air flowing and then
02:54
once that starts heating up it’ll go
02:56
down there and they’ll be nice embers
02:58
and then it’s easy to can it’s easy to
03:00
keep it going after that once this big
03:20
lug
03:20
gets going then it’s gonna be a real
03:23
easy to keep it going too
03:37
[Music]
03:43
yeah I’m kind of keeping the air flowing
03:45
you want to make sure that okay when you
03:59
start seeing too much smoke that means
04:00
that the air is not flowing real well
04:02
okay and then once these bigger logs
04:08
start to heat up and burn then they’ll
04:12
fall down there and then they’ll you
04:13
know this kindling going last for so
04:15
long once this starts going then and
04:18
you’re you’re golden and you can just
04:20
let it go all night and you can even
04:21
start putting wood on there that’s not
04:24
too nice not just dry okay all right so
04:34
that’s about it and then you don’t
04:36
necessarily want to roast the
04:37
marshmallows just yet you want to do
04:39
that you want to wait till everything’s
04:42
kind of hot and it’s an ember
04:44
right there’s Amber’s down there rather
04:46
than rather than the flames because if
04:50
you if you roast them into flames then
04:52
they’ll catch on fire and that’s when
04:54
yeah yeah your s’mores won’t come out
04:57
near as good okay
04:58
so I’ll let this burn for a little while
05:00
and then I’ll come back and we’ll roast
05:02
some marshmallows and make some s’mores
05:05
okay so now that we have it kind of
05:07
going pretty well I’ve added another log
05:11
here in the middle and then you want to
05:13
kind of have a little bit of a gap here
05:14
right it’s right along there to kind of
05:18
encourage the air to flow you don’t want
05:20
them too close but you don’t want to go
05:21
away and then the air just kind of comes
05:23
up on each side of them and then you’re
05:25
good and we can put another log across
05:27
here and then just kind of keep it going
05:30
so as you go we’ll add another log
05:35
especially if you’re just gonna hang out
05:37
at the campfire all night and you want
05:39
to keep it going
05:39
you just just put this across this way
05:44
now okay and then it’ll start burning up
05:47
alongside that okay so that’s all there
05:50
is to it I’m gonna let this go for a
05:53
little while and get the embers going
05:54
and then that’s how we really want to
05:57
roast the marshmallows because again if
05:58
you stick it in the flame it’s gonna
06:00
catch on fire I mean I guess some people
06:02
like that but I don’t I like to make my
06:04
it’s kind of a challenge to see how good
06:07
you can make that marshmallow and they
06:10
get nice and brown golden brown instead
06:12
of left heaven light on fire but if
06:14
you’re in a hurry you can just stick it
06:15
in there and have it light on fire if
06:16
you want to so anyway we’ll come back
06:18
once we start roasting marshmallows
06:22
okay so we’re preparing our s’mores now
06:25
the fire’s not quite ready but if you
06:28
could I’d just show you this in case
06:29
you’ve never done this before so you
06:32
just need some graham crackers alright
06:35
break those in half you get those
06:37
already ready
06:49
and the way we usually do it is we just
06:53
stick the marshmallow on they stick
06:55
right stick a couple in there again one
06:58
is usually fine
07:00
okay but we usually kind of do this with
07:04
some teamwork so we have a few people
07:07
using the roast in the marshmallows and
07:09
then you have somebody just setting this
07:10
up and all they do is they just put it
07:12
here and then once the marshmallow is
07:15
roasted you put it on there and then
07:16
they grab the other graham crackers stop
07:20
it on the top and wholesome goodness
07:23
okay so we’re getting real close and
07:27
then we’ll get to get the tasty s’mores
07:33
okay the fires ruining pretty good right
07:36
about now
07:37
like I said you if you put your
07:40
marshmallow in here in this flame it’s
07:43
gonna light on fire pretty easy so we
07:46
don’t necessarily want to do that but
07:47
let’s go ahead and be careful with these
07:51
too if you’ve never done this before if
07:53
you light them on fire and then you pull
07:56
it out and it goes slinging off these
07:58
things can be a hot projectile so be
08:01
careful you know I usually try to get
08:09
kind of somewhere close to the embers
08:12
rather than in the flame this might be a
08:15
little bit early still but somewhere
08:19
like right down in here
08:21
oh that’s not bad though
08:30
but you want the marshmallow to get soft
08:33
if you if you just let it light on fire
08:35
and pull it out it’ll still be cold on
08:39
the inside that you kind of want the
08:41
whole thing to be mushy because it works
08:42
better for this more okay you can see
08:50
it’s getting pretty nice and brown
08:52
that’s kind of what you like that Brown
08:54
look they’re not the burnt one but the
08:56
brown and they just kind of rotate it
08:58
around keeping it out of the flame again
09:00
kind of right down in the little pocket
09:02
right there where it’s nice and hot okay
09:07
looking good we’re getting close
09:16
okay I think that’s about good so okay
09:28
so then we just want to go ahead and put
09:30
a graham-cracker there and we want to
09:34
put a hunk of chocolate there and then
09:37
we want to have our other graham cracker
09:41
and then we just put it right on top and
09:42
then we put it here push it carefully
09:45
your pants it’s kind of twist the stick
09:47
as you pull it out okay there we go
09:53
awesome goodness okay so you see this
09:56
spot right here this is where you want
09:58
to be you get over in the flame that’s
10:00
going to start on a fire and it’s hot
10:02
there down there so you can be right in
10:04
here right by those Amber’s right I just
10:09
kind of move it around keep it from
10:13
catching on fire
10:25
it’s easy to get impatient though
10:28
because you’re ready for your smorc
10:30
right but if you just kind of keep it in
10:33
those hot hot air you can see it start
10:35
to smoke okay
10:36
see how it’s nice and brown ooh that’s
10:38
looking good starting to smoke whoa see
10:50
that’s what we want it just like that
10:57
it’s starting to puff up a little bit to
11:05
see that’s what you want that’s about as
11:09
good as it gets all right so yeah you
11:15
get up here in this plum in these flames
11:16
they’re gonna it’ll light it on fire
11:18
you’re gonna stay in those embers right
11:20
in there all right so hopefully that
11:23
gives you the confidence to build a fire
11:25
dry wood make sure the air is
11:29
circulating good too and so right with
11:31
kindling and good circulation of air and
11:35
just kind of take your time don’t
11:36
smother it smother it like a lot of
11:39
things it’s not good to some other
11:41
things right so it needs air to breathe
11:43
so anyway hope that gives you the
11:47
confidence to try for yourself and you
11:49
got this I’m proud of you and god bless
11:51
you
