Check This Popular Home Improvement Off Your To-Do List During Quarantine

By the end of self-isolation, our homes will have never looked better. In addition to bread baking, crafting, and TikTok-ing, Americans have been passing the time by making light improvements to their spaces. Realtor.com recently asked people if they decided to undertake projects while sheltering in place during the pandemic, and more than 30 percent confirmed they already have, while another 20 percent of respondents suggested they were planning to.

The number-one task keeping both renters and homeowners busy? Organizing closets and the garage. Couple self-isolation with the urge to spring clean and it’s no wonder tidying these two areas is at the top of everyone’s to-do list, followed by gardening, painting walls, and rearranging furniture. If you’re one of the 50 percent of people who has yet to tackle a home improvement during quarantine, consider this the motivational boost you need to get started:

Garages are like black holes that suck in holiday decorations, gardening tools, and lawn games, so start by tossing anything you haven’t seen or used in the past five years. When it comes to hard-to-store toys, use an old-school workbench pegboard to hang bike helmets, tennis rackets, and umbrellas from straight hooks (this method is Marie Kondo–approved). For a next-level space, do like Justina Blakeney and turn one section into an entertaining area by adding custom open shelving and a tiled accent wall.

As for the master closet, if you want more room but can’t change the footprint, follow in renter Anna Z .Gray’s footsteps by opening up the doorway with an arch and adding central cubbyholes for pants, bags, and sweaters. Then get rid of any clutter on the floor by displaying strappy sandals and heels on curtain rods (Alyssa Coscarelli bought simple white ones at IKEA for her space). Finally, contain everything else—linens, office supplies, pantry staples—in space-saving containers. You don’t need a sledgehammer to be productive during this time.
